El Tablazo
El Tablazo is an iconic destination among Bogotá’s gravel and MTB cycling communities. Starting from the picturesque town of Subachoque, about 50km NWW of Bogotá, the route rises up and up, first on a fairly steep paved road with a few double-digit ramps (lots of shops on this part for refreshment breaks), and then along a fairly flat dirt road past an enchanted lake, before the gradient increases once again for the last 7km. Your destination, the cliffs at the edge of the Bogotá high plain, is visible along most of the route, with the antenna complex at the top gradually coming into view as you get closer. The views are amazing all the way up, especially the last 7km, but when you get to the top (after a slightly technical ascent), oh my! You’ll find yourself at over 3,400masl on the edge of a cliff, looking out over a 300+m sheer drop down to the valley below, with multiple layers of mountains stretching out into the distance as far as the eye can see. And when you turn around, on the other side the vista is almost completely open over the Bogotá high-plain to the eastern mountains, around 65km away. This ride is a beast of immense beauty!
