Puente Ají
If you’re looking for a challenge, this rollercoaster of a route is an absolute gem! It follows the main road out of Bogota to the town of La Calera, before turning off onto a concrete strip road where you’ll encounter the first challenge of the day: a 1,500m wall with an average gradient of 14.3%! After that, the road levels off a bit and a short gravel descent with beautiful views across to Cerro Tunjaque takes you down to the turnoff onto an almost unused semi-paved road, that climbs through a lovely Andean forest to the entrance to an old mine. Just before the mine, an insanely steep rocky track (that you might need to hike parts of, especially if it’s been raining recently) takes you back down to the road to Mundo Nuevo, where you’ll find one of the only shops on the route. If you’re not up for the single track section, take the road to the right about 2km before the mine – it loops around to Mundo Nuevo along a slightly longer but much less intense descent. After Mundo Nuevo, another picturesque descent takes you down to the turnoff to Puente Ají, where you cross the River Blanco and start the main event: a 15km gravel climb with an average gradient of 7.3%, a couple of kilometres at over 10%, and a sprinkling of 20% ramps! It’s intense, but well worth it for the amazing views across the valley all the way up. Once you reach the top of the climb the road levels off and meanders across some gentle hills before rejoining the main road back to Bogota.
