Cuchilla Cachimal
This rollercoaster route rises up out of Bogotá on the classic Patios climb and follows the iconic La Cima climb up to a high altitude golf club, before turning off onto the dirt. After a lovely stretch of rolling hills, and a descent with breathtaking views of the Cerro Tunjaque cliff face right in front of you, you reach the mighty Cuchilla Cachimal climb. It starts off at a gentle low-single digit gradient and then gets steeper and steeper for the next 8km as you make your way up; the last kilometre has a series of leg-busting ramps and a gradient that doesn’t drop below 11%! The sense of satisfaction at the top is amazing. There are lovely views of the back face of Cerro Tunjaque all the way up, and a couple of trials on your left will take you to that summit if you’re in the mood for some hike-a-bike. When you reach the top, there are a couple of great viewpoints where you can take a breather. A couple of kilometres down the other side, you reach the small settlement of Frailejón, where there’s a small shop with a bench outside to sit and watch the world go by. After that, it’s pretty much downhill all the way back to the main road.
