El Tablazo is an iconic destination among Bogotá’s gravel and MTB cycling communities. Starting from the picturesque town of Subachoque, about 50km NW of Bogotá, the route rises up and up, first on a steep paved road with some double-digit ramps (& lots of shops on this part for refreshment breaks), then along a rolling dirt road past an enchanted lake, and finally an amazing and demanding gravel climb . Your destination, the cliffs at the edge of the Bogotá high plain, is visible along most of the route, with the antenna complex at the top gradually coming into view as you get closer. The views are amazing all the way up, especially the last 5km or so. And when you get to the top you find yourself on the edge of a cliff at over 3,400masl, with views over to Bogotá behind you and a 300+m sheer drop down to the valley below, with multiple layers of mountains stretching out into the distance as far as the eye can see. There are lots of hiking trails along the edge of the cliff – on weekends you’ll find secure parking where you can leave your bike if you want to explore more on foot.
