San Agustín – Naranjos Loop
This picturesque loop takes you through the verdant coffee plantations to the south of San Agustin and returns along the edge of the archeological park. The first part follows a super-steep paved descent out of the village down to River Naranjos at 1,500 masl. The climb back up is paved for the first couple of kilometres and reaches 2,100 masl at its highest point. Most of the gradients on the climb are around 5%, but the last kilometre is a leg-busting 12% average with ramps of up to 20%! It’s well worth it, though, for the amazing views across the coffee-covered slopes on either side of the road as you climb up, and the spectacular views of San Agustin and the archeological park way below you as you wind back down. Once you start the descent the road surface becomes progressively worse, especially after rain; it’s rideable, but only just in some places. There aren’t any shops on the route, but there are a multitude of places to stop, rest and enjoy the scenery.
